In the Beginning

By Pastor John Crotts

Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” That verse and the truth that it represents have fallen upon hard times lately. Our country was founded on the belief that all men have certain inalienable rights endowed by their Creator. Yet there is hardly a major seminary in our country where the professors teach that God created everything in six days.Unfortunately, this extends beyond the liberal and mainline seminaries, even to ones considered to be evangelical.

The Bible’s clear teaching of God’s creation of the world is very important. Several implications emerge from understanding its truth.

First, the fact that God created the heavens and the earth means that God exists. If people can get rid of the idea of creation, they can get rid of the Creator. The Bible offers no other explanation for how all things came into existence other than God’s very word. In six days he created everything that is.

Few can honestly look at the vast intricacies of the world, and its marvelous beauty and not affirm that someone designed it. It is utterly obvious that incredible design demands an incredible designer.

Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the works of His hands.” Paul confirms this in Romans 1:19-20 which says, “because that which is known about God is evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”

These texts show that there is enough revelation about God from creation alone, that God can justly condemn those who reject him. Everything in his creation reveals that a great and glorious God exists.

An understanding of creation also reveals that God owns everything. While we strive to climb the corporate ladder to make lots of money to buy lots of stuff, we must not forget that ultimately we own nothing. God owns everything you think you own, everything everyone else thinks they own, and everyone who thinks they own everything!

When we put together a project we enjoy a sense of accomplishment as we gaze at our creation. It would be bizarre for that completed project to bid us farewell and set out to do its own thing. Yet we have gone beyond that to literally rebel against our Creator. This rebellion leads to the third truth that emerges from the truth of creation.

Creation also teaches us that God has ultimate authority over everyone. Not only does he exist and own us, but also he sets the rules and will hold us to them. The rules he has set are his laws. These were not just for people in the Bible; they are for all men everywhere. They are the world’s ultimate standard of right and wrong.

While the people of God’s creation actively rebel against God in their words, actions, and even heart attitudes, the Creator is not looking the other way. The Bible reveals that the Creator will one day hold all people accountable for their sins at the great and final judgement.

Jesus said, “And I say to you, that every careless word that men shall speak, they shall render account for it in the day of judgement” (Matthew 12:36). Romans 2:5-6 adds: “But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgement of God, who will render to every man according to his deeds.”

A major reason people search for an alternative to the biblical truth of creation is to wash this horrible image out of their minds. If they can eliminate creation they can eliminate the Creator, who owns them, and has authority over them. They can live as they please with no ultimate consequences.

Such vain attempts to escape God’s accountability are like the child who covers his eyes and thinks he is hidden. There is only one person fooled in the child’s game. If you have been covering your eyes to the reality of your Creator and the authority he rightfully has over you, it is not too late to take your hands away.

Though God is just, he sent his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come to earth. Jesus perfectly obeyed God’s laws and died a substitutionary death for sinners on the cross. Three days later he rose again from the dead. The Creator offers any who will turn from their sin and put their trust in Jesus a full and free pardon.

We can never be good enough to earn God’s favor. We must put our faith alone in Christ alone. God will put your sin in Jesus’ account, and his righteousness in your account.

Don’t let another day go by trampling down God’s creation. Uncover your eyes and look to your mighty Creator for mighty mercy today.
