Many among us are asking, “So, what’s going on with the building?”
Let me try to answer that. We engaged TomCo to help us do an assessment, in what we’re calling Phase 1. We know that the worksite was left in an unsafe mess. That has been cleaned up to a large degree and put into order, with an inventory of construction materials on site. We still have a bit of temporary reinforcement of the main portico entryway because it was not constructed per code for safety.
The one issue that has been holding us back is Ground Penetrating Radar testing of the hollow block and elevator shaft to ensure that it was originally constructed to specifications. Those hollow block walls are load-bearing and must have the right steel rebar and mortar reinforcement to hold the weight. GPR is very cool: it sees through concrete masonry to determine what’s underneath/behind/inside. That’s way better than busting into the inside of the blocks to inspect them visually. We’re praying that they were erected as per design; then we won’t have to do anything to remediate. However, we know of at least two places where we’ll have to fix the block and reinforcing. It’s better to be safe now than sorry later.
We’ve also been doing some detail planning and improvement to the documentation of details for the rest of the building. This involves multiple parties, multiple professionals, multiple meetings, phone calls, emails. Just for example, my email folder for the Building Project has 3,168 active, relevant, saved emails. At the close of Phase 1 (hoping for a May 8 goal date), we’ll be safe, ready, well-planned to begin the Youth Room in earnest.
Even prior to that, we may see some movement of the sewer connection, which involved technology guided boring of a force main tube from the back of our building underneath the GA-34 highway to hook into the Coweta County sewer system. Check out this video (2m15s) as an example.
Lord willing, all this extra planning will enable us to get the most accurate and best pricing from subcontractors moving forward, and reduce slow-downs later due to anticipating the questions and issues that might arise. Pray with us to that end.
Phase 2 will be the Youth Room. Phase 3 the new addition. Phase 4 the new auditorium. Once we start Phase 2 as a priority, we’ll continue staging and further development of Phase 3 and 4.
